'Nothing about us without us'

Nothing about us without us’:
Enabling non-discriminative autism and Asperger’s syndrome research participation.

Too often autism and Asperger’s syndrome research is carried out without first consulting with the ‘experts’- people with the condition. This can result in studies which do not fully appreciate diversity, use inappropriate research designs and methods and include terms of reference which may be disliked by the very people who are included in the study. It is important that researchers ask the right sort of questions and that they are phrased in a way which is ‘autism friendly’. In order to make research participation as inclusive as possible it is also very essential that interview situations are conducted in a manner which is made as comfortable for the participant as po...
ssible.

Therefore, I am offering autistic people the opportunity to take part in a consultation which will contribute towards the development of a research project investigating the criminal justice system experiences of autistic young suspects, defendants, and offenders.

You do not need to have any experience of the criminal justice system yourself to take part in the consultation as rather than being research participants you would actually be informing the development of a doctoral research project which will over the next two years identify and include participants who themselves have experienced the criminal justice system as young people.

If you would like the opportunity to take part in this consultation, or know of someone else who might like to participate, please contact me- Ann Browning by email at A.L.Browning@lboro.ac.uk and I will send you a consultation pack.

If you would like to know more about me or my research please visit my recently developed website at

or my Loughborough University profile page

I hope that you will take the opportunity to ‘have your say’ in the development of this important, worthwhile and much needed study.

Kind regards,

Ann.

title: ‘The criminal justice experiences of young suspects, defendants and offenders with Asperger’s syndrome and other autistic spectrum disorders in the UK

Current Research:
Using an interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) approach I shall examine the criminal justice experiences of young people with autistic conditions who have been suspects, defendants or offenders in the UK, investigate any transitional issues which arise in emerging adulthood as young people are transferred from youth to adult justice services and explore the methodological complexities of undertaking research with young autistic participants in forensic settings and develop appropriate research strategies.
