'Reaching My Autistic Son Through Disney'

In our first year in Washington, our son disappeared.
Just shy of his 3rd birthday, an engaged, chatty child, full of typical speech — “I love you,” “Where are my Ninja Turtles?” “Let’s get ice cream!” — fell silent. He cried, inconsolably. Didn’t sleep. Wouldn’t make eye contact. His only word was “juice.”

House Bills Aim to Aid Students with Disabilities

"The majority of kids in school with disabilities, you would never know had a disability," said Mary Jacob, Executive Director of the Statewide Louisiana Parent Training and Information Center. "These are kids with learning disabilities. These are kids with things like dyslexia or ADHD."

According to the Louisiana Developmental Disabilities Council, in 2012, 39% of Louisiana students with disabilities dropped out of school.

"We're expecting all of those children to perform just like our children without disabilities or beyond a non-diploma track where they count for nothing and they can't get a diploma," said the President of the Louisiana Association of Special Education Administrators, Laureen Mayfield.

House Bills 993 and 1015, written by St. Tammany Parish Representative John Schroder and Baton Rouge Senator Dan Claitor, aim to change that.

"Working to the highest standards that the people closest to them know they can work to and they achieve it. Why shouldn't they have the recognition that they deserve?" asked Cindy Arceneaux, Project Director for the Statewide Louisiana Parent Training and Information Center

Digital Assessments Evolve for Students With Autism

In this new environment, students with autism are tested electronically—often by adaptive assessments that adjust the level of difficulty of questions based on how students are answering them—and the assessments and activities are standards-based, Ms. Bowser added.

Assistive technologies for students with autism have progressed with the help of iPads, tablets, and a plethora of apps that address learning, social skills, and communication, according to experts. Built into many of those technologies are new methods of gauging what students know, using adaptive techniques and multimedia features.

Assistive Tech for Testing Merges Into Mainstream

As students with disabilities in Virginia's Fauquier County district take online assessments, they have access to a toolbox of technologies that can make it easier to show what they know. An optic mouse can help magnify text; a text-to-speech tool provides a spoken version of exam questions; and various switches and joysticks, for those unable to use a mouse and keyboard, can be merged with the assessment.

"But we want to make sure we are offering services to all of our guests. When we noticed a trend a while back with land-based hotels and movie theaters offering more autism-friendly programs, we immediately wondered, 'well, what can we do about this here?'"
Since then the company has been working to incorporate programs and amenities that follow guidelines provided by Autism on the Seas, the leading travel organization catering to vacationers with autism and other developmental disabilities.

Autism and intellectual disability incidence linked with environmental factors

An analysis of 100 million U.S. medical records reveals that autism and intellectual disability (ID) rates are correlated at the county level with incidence of genital malformations in newborn males, an indicator of possible congenital exposure to harmful environmental factors such as pesticides.

Autism rates—after adjustment for gender, ethnic, socioeconomic and geopolitical factors—jump by 283 percent for every one-percent increase in frequency of malformations in a county. Intellectual disability rates increase 94 percent. Slight increases in autism and ID rates are also seen in wealthier and more urban counties.

...

Although autism and intellectual disability have genetic components, environmental causes are thought to play a role. To identify potential environmental links, Rzhetsky and his team analyzed an insurance claims dataset that covered nearly one third of the U.S. population. They used congenital malformations of the reproductive system in males as an indicator of parental exposure to toxins.

This report was developed and produced by a joint task force representing the

Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators (AMTE), Association of State

Supervisors of Mathematics (ASSM), National Council of Supervisors of Mathematics

(NCSM), and National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM). After Common

Core State Standards for Mathematics (CCSSM) were released on June 2, 2010, the

task force was formed to develop recommendations on how to support

implementation of the CCSSM and to discuss how the four organizations could

collaborate while supporting their memberships and a shared vision of mathematics

education. This report has been shared with the Board of Directors of each

organization.
Members of the Task Force

Diane Briars, NCSM President, Pittsburgh

Kathryn Chval, University of Missouri (AMTE)

Linda Curtis-Bey, New York City Public Schools (NCSM)

Brad Findell, ASSM President, Ohio Department of Education

Diana L. Kasbaum, Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (ASSM)

Gladis Kersaint, University of South Florida (AMTE)

Glenda Lappan, Michigan State University (Chair, NCTM)

Matt Larson, Lincoln NE Public Schools, (NCTM)

This report identifies activities needed to support those involved in the

mathematics education of K12 students as they work to understand and use the

Common Core State Standards (CCSS) for mathematics. Members of the Task

Force are committed to promoting an equity agenda that considers the impact of

CCSS on all students. In order to meet this goal the framework focuses on
