Tackling autism in the Middle East

Treatment for autism in the region has progressed, but lack of awareness and support services remains a challenge.
The hallmarks of autism are an impaired ability to communicate and socialise, and a narrow range of repetitive behaviours and activities.

The Shafallah Center, opened in 1999, has graduated a number of students who now work in banks, post offices and telecom companies, as well as operating a kiosk in Doha’s Villagio Mall. “We try to teach the child to be adaptable to any environment, and many of them enter the workforce,” Itani said. “Our goal is for students to graduate from the centre and become happy members of society.”

The WHO said the global median rate of autism prevalence has been estimated at 62 per 10,000, although some studies have placed it substantially higher. And for the Middle East, it may be an even bigger concern.

Drama can help autistic children improve their symptoms, a study has shown

Children who interacted in especially designed ‘sensory environments’ saw their autism symptoms greatly improve.

Children with autism who take part in drama and performance activities may be able to improve their communication and interpersonal skills, a study has found.

As part of the research project, children aged between seven and 12 years old interacted with themed ‘sensory environments’ called Under the Sea, Outer Space, Forest, Under the City, and the Arctic.

Each environment was designed to accommodate 22 children, who were were encouraged to respond to triggers created using lighting, sound, physical action, and puppetry.

Yorktown’s Guiding Eyes For The Blind Helps Autistic Children

Yorktown’s Guiding Eyes for the Blind is assisting children with autism.

With April marking National Autism Awareness Month, the nonprofit will welcome six families to its Yorktown Heights headquarters to meet the children’s new autism service dogs for the first time.

“Heeling Autism dogs ensure safety for children with autism and help them to develop lasting emotional and social bonds. As a result, families are able to lead more normal, less stressful lives. Parents often report other life-changing benefits as well, including increased independence, confidence and social acceptance,” representatives said in a press release.

CHILDREN WITH AUTISM WANT TO HAVE FRIENDS TO PLAY WITH.
Quote from Explaining Autism to Children by Dana Fialco:
"Even though it might be hard for them (children with autism) to make friends, they want to have friends like everyone else and they have a lot of love and beauty to give. Sometimes that means the rest of us have to find ways to help understand them and connect with them, just like those with autism are trying to find Quote from Explaining Autism to Children by Dan...a Fialco:

I can fly in a dream full of happiness
Though I'm down on earth where I was born
I am flying high, where the angels live
Having lovely thoughts of of friends
who want to play with me.
I would be so happy holding hands and singing songs
Everyone would like each other and

Toys AUcross America was created when an 11-year-old boy with Asperger syndrome decided to donate his toy trains and cars to other kids who are Autistic. It all started when a group member in a Facebook group called World of Autism-Making it a positive one posted a picture of her son and stated hewanted to have a Lightning McQueen party for his birthday. Michael Miller, the creator of Toys AUcross America offered to send a few Cars vehicles to her son. Unfortunately, Michael learned she lived in Australia and has acknowledged that the shipping from the U.S. was a bit expensive to do. She completely understood, but he felt guilty anyway.

Autism Expressed, her fledgling business, teaches digital skills to students with autism. It is the first program of its kind on the market, experts believe, and one McKeone hopes will modernize special-education services.

It began in a way familiar to many teachers. She saw a need in her classroom, so she filled it.

Functional diversity, a new term in the struggle for  dignity in the diversity of the human being

Functional diversity (disability)

Functional diversity is a politically and socially correct term for special needs, disability, impairment and handicap, which began to be used in Spain in scientific writing, at the initiative of those directly affected, in 2005.[1] Wikipedia

Usage

This term is intended to replace other ones with pejorative semantics. It proposes a shift towards non-negative, non-disparaging and non-patronizing terms. The formal justification of the term can be found in the book El Modelo de la Diversidad by Agustina Palacios and Javier Romañach, 2007, ISBN 978-84-96474-40-6. Examples of usage:
  • "people with functional diversity" instead of "people with special needs"
  • "physical functional diversity"
  • "mobility functional diversity", "person who uses a wheelchair", "wheelchair user"
  • "motor functional diversity"
  • "dexterity functional diversity"
  • "visual functional diversity", "people who use screen readers as their primary means of accessing a computer"
  • "people with a visual processing functional diversity"
  • "auditory functional diversity"
  • "mental functional diversity"
  • "intellectual functional diversity"
  • "cognitive functional diversity"
  • "organic functional diversity"
  • "circumstantial and/or temporary functional diversity"
  • "person with a functional diversity"
  • "persons without functional diversity" rather than "normal" or "healthy"
  • "people without functional diversity", "typically developing children"

Conclusion
In this article we have identified three elements which define the members of a

group fighting for its rights as different:

• Bodies in which organs, parts or the whole body function differently

because they are internally different.

• Women and men who, due to the different way their bodies function,

perform their daily tasks (moving around, reading, gripping, dressing, going

to the toilet, communicating etc.) differently. (We could say, women and

men who function in another manner).

• A group discriminated against for any of the two reasons given above.

The way we at the Forum for Independent Living propose denominating this

group, to which we belong, is women and men with functional diversity, as we

understand that this is the first denomination in history in which the vision of a

human reality is not given negative or medical connotations, and in which the

emphasis is placed on its difference or diversity, values which enrich the world in

which we live.
