Special Education: An Advocate's Manual | Michigan Protection & Advocacy Service

Special Education: An Advocate's Manual

State and federal laws assure Michigan children with disabilities the right to attend school with the services and supports necessary to help them learn and grow. “Special Education: An Advocate’s Manual,” is MPAS’ guide to the rights and laws that govern special education and other rights of children with disabilities in Michigan. Each chapter includes a brief summary, a list of “Advocacy Hints,” detailed descriptions of state and federal rights, sample letters and forms (including the Michigan Department of Education’s model IEP form), and resources for more information. The manual is divided into 15 chapters and can be downloaded or ordered in print form by contacting MPAS.

PARCC States Announce Field Testing; Non-Profit Launched

Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers - Washington, D.C. - July 29, 2013 - Fourteen states and the District of Columbia announced today they are committed to field testing the next-generation PARCC assessments in the... upcoming 2013-14 school year, a key step in building a high-quality assessment system that will be rolled out broadly in schools during the following academic year.
The states participating in the field tests are Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, District of Columbia, Illinois, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Mississippi, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Ohio, Rhode Island, and Tennessee.
Not all students in a participating state take field tests. Generally just about 10 percent of students in tested grades and subjects will participate across PARCC states; most of those students will only take a portion of the tests. The PARCC field tests will not generate student scores. The PARCC field tests will be in administered in March-May 2014.
PARCC has formally amended its grant for Race to the Top funding to fully operate as an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with its own funding, board of directors, staff and programs. Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers

New book helps parents manage life with Autistic children

In each chapter of the book a different mom discusses her family’s journey through Autism along with the personal struggles and successes.
According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), as of April 2013, the latest figures for the rates of Autism are 1:50 children, 1:33 boys. This number has continued to rise at an extremely alarming rate.

An organization, called The Thinking Moms’ Revolution, has been formed to assist parents with managing the day to day lives of living with an autistic child. They are a group of 23 moms (and one dad) from Montana to Malaysia, with some local Louisiana thrown in, that have come together to write a book titled “The Thinking Moms’ Revolution: Autism Beyond the Spectrum”.

..., just the FACTS, please!: Petition | Tricare: Stop Tricare from autism thera...: WASHINGTON, DC (June 27, 2013) -- Military families will face new restrictions and cutbacks obtaining applied behavior analysis (ABA) therapy for their children with autism under new policies made public this week by TRICARE, the Department of Defense health benefits program.
"These policies drastically change how ABA is covered under TRICARE and will impact all beneficiaries and service providers," said Karen Driscoll, Autism Speaks' associate director for federal government affairs and military relations. "Autism Speaks is very concerned about the imposition of age and duration limits, threatened cutoffs for treatment, and the administrative hurdles to access care.
"Military families deserve better," she said. “Our clinical science and advocacy teams are working on a report and plan of action to address. Please stay tuned for policy updates.”
