Autism and sibling guilt

   When I was little I fantasized about living in an institution like my older, profoundly autistic brother. At the ripe old age of six, I thought that if I lived in the institution, as my actual neurotypical self, I’d make my parents happy because I could talk, unlike my completely nonverbal brother. As the sibling born without special needs, I grew up considered the “lucky one”. But, as luck would have it, life has a funny habit of never being that simple.
