Canadian offer quieter, calmer visits with Santa for kids with autism

Malls offer kids with autism chance to see Santa     Malls across Canada are making special arrangements so that kids with autism can take part in a popular holiday tradition: taking a photo with Santa.
While visiting Santa is a rite of passage for many Canadian kids, the location -- crowded, noisy malls -- can prove to be too overwhelming for kids with autism.
But this year, nine malls across the country owned by Oxford Properties are opening their doors earlier so those children can still get some face time with Mr. Claus.
Calgary's Southcentre Mall was the first shopping centre to adopt the autism-friendly photo sessions last year.

There is no federal monitoring system to track the prevalence of autism in Canada. However, the Society for Treatment of Autism estimates that one in 165 Canadian children are affected by Autism spectrum disorder.
In 2012, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control reported that the prevalence rate of autism in the U.S. was one in 88 children.

12 Days of Inclusion

INCLUSIVE SCHOOLS WEEK is December 2-7, 2013!

Every year I share some sort of holiday countdown in the form of recommendations or ideas. Last year, my twelve days countdown featured recmmended books. The year before, I suggested gifts for educators, families, and students. This year, the launch of “12 Days of Inclusion” comes immediately following the release of my latest book, From Text Maps to Memory Caps: 100 MORE Ways to Differentiate Instruction in the K-12 Inclusive Classroom. Therefore, I am using these first two weeks of December to highlight a dozen of my favorite ideas from the book.

When your books become tattered, don’t throw them away! Instead, cut them up and create a series of stick puppets to use in retellings, dramatic play, and as a tool for creating new narratives.
Puppets make lessons whimsical, bring a bit of levity to the classroom, and provide opportunities for writing, communication, and social...

To encourage participation in daily lessons, some of your students may benefit from quick and easy supplements to their primary communication systems. Quick quip key chains are not enough to meet all or even most of a student’s communication needs, but they can work well in environments where students do not have easy access to...
